Are there really any telecommute jobs out there, or are they all scams?

There absolutely are jobs out there! Most of the telecommute jobs I see fall into the following categories:

  • Sales
  • Programming
  • Web Design/Marketing
  • Highly specialized skills (Transcription, IT recruiting, editing, etc.)

If you have skills in an area that is in demand for telecommuting, then keep in mind that the competition is tremendously fierce. Make sure you have a fantastic resume and that you are selling yourself effectively.

You also need to be flexible. Assuming that you have a specialized skill, remember that most employers won't hire someone right off the street and allow them to telecommute. Many companies have a policy of having a new employee work a trial period on-site and then, once they've proven their abilities, allow them to telecommute.

If you don't feel that you are qualified in those areas, or another specialized area, then go out and get those skills! Your local community college is a good place to start. There are also many Online Courses.
