Developing Your Work-at-Home 'Scam Radar'Developing Your Work-at-Home 'Scam Radar'
(c) Copyright 2001, Angela Wu

The work at home market is huge, and growing everyday. You can hardly be online for one minute before you're confronted with business opportunities and offers of home based work.

For the 'newbies' to the work-at-home market, here are a few tips to help you avoid the scams ...

1. ENVELOPE STUFFING IS A SCAM.

You've probably seen those mouth-watering ads that tempt you with the promise of $2 (or $3 or $4) for each and every envelope you stuff.

Does the phrase, 'Too good to be true' come to mind?

It should. In this technologically-advanced era, we have envelope stuffing machines that can do the work cheaper and faster than hiring a home worker. Even without a machine, why would a company pay someone $2000 to stuff 1000 envelopes, when they can pay any number of willing local workers the same MONTHLY salary to stuff unlimited envelopes?

This is how it works: Normally you pay a 'startup' or 'materials' fee - or sometimes the scammer states that the fee is to 'make sure you're serious'.

You stuff the envelopes with a flyer or circular that attempts to scam another poor soul into parting with the startup fee.

In all these years online, I have never met anyone who's made even a single dollar with envelope stuffing.

2. STAY AWAY FROM ASSEMBLY WORK

It sounds so reasonable. You pay for materials and instructions. They send you a kit. You assemble the item, and the company buys it back from you to sell to their own customers.

Reality: you pay the startup fee. You get the kit and assemble the item. The company rejects your assembled product because it 'doesn't meet quality standards'. You can stuck with a ton of junk, which you may or may not be able to resell to customers you find on your own.

Are there legitimate assembly work opportunities? Possibly. A healthy dose of skepticism will help to protect you from potential scams.

3. "NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY" = BE CAREFUL!

"No experience necessary" is most often termed, "Entry level position" in a real job listing. It isn't too likely that a company would hire someone with no experience to work from home because:

  • Training them would be difficult.
  • Companies tend to prefer telecommuters who have *proven* that they are capable, independent workers who don't need supervision.

Sure, there are legitimate companies that will train you. However, companies that are offering telecommuting work are likely looking for qualified prospects with proven track records.

4. DO THE MATH.

There are loads of job postings that state that you can earn several thousands a month, working 20 hours a week doing typing or data entry or some other administrative work.

One I saw recently claimed that the company would find all of your clients for you. You work 4-5 hours a day and make $5000/month.

Let's look at the math: Assume you work 5 hours a day, Monday to Friday. That's 25 hours/week or 100 hours/month. At $5000/month, you're making a whopping $50/hour just to type!

This is not at all likely. The company could hire someone locally, pay her a monthly salary that's LESS than that, and have her work a full week.

5. IS MONEY THE ONLY REQUIREMENT OF THE JOB?

Above all, legitimate companies are looking for people who can get the job done. They tell you what types of skills are required and what your responsibilities would be. Then they ask for your qualifications, a cover letter, a resume, and perhaps references.

Scammers, on the other hand, ask for money. So long as you send them your money, you're instantly qualified!

6. "WORK AT HOME" IS SECONDARY TO THE JOB.

Once again, employers are looking for qualified employees or contractors. They're *not* looking for "telecommuters". However, one of the job "perks" may be an option to work from home.

A headline that screams, "WORK AT HOME!" will attract every would-be telecommuter, from technical people to clerical staff to sales people and stay-at-home parents. It doesn't "pre-screen" the applicants.

On the other hand, legitimate job postings tend to list the position title, such as PROGRAMMER/ANALYST or TELEMARKETER. This helps to "qualify" the types of people who apply for the job. The company's valuable time is then spent reviewing only potentially qualified applicants.

7. THE ONLY PERSON THAT CAN GUARANTEE A JOB IS THE EMPLOYER.

There are several websites offering access to databases of jobs (some free, some for a fee). These jobs are posted there by employers. Now, the employer is looking for a specific type of person to fill the position ... if the website you've joined claims to be able to guarantee you a job - even though they're not the ones doing the hiring! - then it's time to look elsewhere.

Please remember that these tips apply to work at home jobs or opportunities. They *don't* necessarily apply to the building of a home business! Home businesses are something else altogether, and may require you to invest at least a little money up-front. But that's another topic for another time.

Legitimate work-at-home jobs really are out there! Just be cautious when considering any telecommuting position. Don't assume everything you come across is legitimate -- and don't automatically assume it's a scam, either. Be open to new possibilities and do your research. Happy hunting!

How to Choose an Ideal Business For YouHow to Choose an Ideal Business For You
by Howard Sambol

Chances are, if you're reading this, you're seeking a home based business or you're already pursuing one. Our aim in this article will be to help you determine whether a business is ideal for you. This will save you a lot of time, money and frustration that occurs when you choose a business not well matched to you. Keep in mind that we will NOT be seeking to convince you to pursue any particular business here. We are taking a totally neutral stance.

Introduction
Statistics reveal that...

* most people starting a home based business fail to stay with their business more than a few months.
* the vast majority of people don't make enough money in their business to leave their regular day job.
* of those people who do make money at a home based business, very few enjoy what they are doing.

Here are the primary reasons for these statistics.

1. Most people do not choose a business with a well thought out plan for evaluating the business in relation to themselves.

2. Most people are unaware of the many factors important in selecting a business and they often act impulsively when making the decision. Very often, the decision is circumstantial and superficial. Maybe someone you know happens to be in a particular business. It sounds good, so you jump in.

3. Most people have little clarity about themselves, their life purpose goals and values. They are totally money focused and fail to take other factors into consideration. Without clarity of life direction, it is virtually impossible to know whether a career, job or business will be a right for you. There is very little in our educational system that encourages you to clarify your ideal life direction. Therefore, you need to recognize the importance of this for yourself and use the many tools and resources available to help you in this area.

Business Assessment Exercise
The business assessment exercise below will allow you to evaluate any business opportunity effectively. For each of the following areas, enter a number from 1-10 (1-3=little, 4-7=some, 8-10=great) that best represents how you feel so far about the area. To what degree....

1. Would you share the company's products or services even if you made no money at all?
____ [Alignment]

2. Will doing this business be compatible with your prefered lifestyle?
____ [LifeStyle]

3. Are you genuinely excited about sharing the products with people?
____ [Products/Conviction]

4. Will you devote the time needed to achieve success on a day to day and long term basis?
____ [Time/Energy Commitment]

5. Can this business meet your income objectives in your desired time frame?
____ [Projected Income]

6. Will each product sale produce a significant net profit for you?
____ [Profit Margin]

7. Are you "coachable", i.e. willing to receive and apply instruction from an experienced person?
____ [Coachability]

8. Can you realistically apply the company's recommended system for lead generation?
____ [Marketing Systems]

9. Will you be able to successfully apply the prescribed sales tools to close sales?
____ [Sales Process]

10. Will training be provided so you can gain the necessary skills needed for this business?
____ [Training]

11. Does the company's history, stability and overall profitabily inspire confidence for the future?
____ [Company History, Stability & Profitability]

12. Can you comfortably afford the startup capital necessary for success in this business?
____ [Startup Capital Needed]

13. Do the trends in the marketplace and economy point to strong success for this company?
____ [Business Trends]

14. Do your close friends and family support you in pursuing this business?
____ [Support]

15. Do you have a gut level feeling about this business being right for you?
____ [Intuition]

Scoring
Total score between 120-150: This is a very good business for you and may be ideal. Total score between 90-120: Business has potential for you but more information is needed Total score between 75-90: Business has some appeal but lacks critical factors. Not recommended Total score below 75: This business is not a match for you. It is time to explore other options.

Summary
It is never too late to find the perfect career or business for you. What is needed is your commitment to finding the truth in yourself about your life purpose, what you love and what you want to contribute in the world. The key is to get clear on what you're seeking first and then evaluate business opportunities which are aligned with your goals and values.

There are a lot of ways of making money. To reiterate, don't make money the sole factor in choosing a career or business. If you do, you're risking having it blow up down the road and being faced with the task of starting again. My personal preference is a business that truly makes a difference in the world and which teaches people about freedom. What is your preference?

Are You Stopping Yourself from Success? Are You Stopping Yourself from Success?
By Noah St. John, author of Permission To Succeed
http://www.PermissionToSucceed.com

We all know people who are intelligent, creative and talented, and yet always seem to sabotage their success.

Not many people realize that the same mechanism that causes eating disorders (such as anorexia) also causes millions of people to starve themselves of success. While this may sound strange, this condition, known as success anorexia, actually causes "the fear of success" and "self-sabotage" -- behaviors we're more familiar with.

People who starve themselves of success:

* Read lots of self-help books but don't use it to improve their own lives

* Make much less than they're capable of making

* Expect themselves to be perfect all the time

* Find it very easy to start projects and very hard to finish them

* Feel guilty saying "no" to others

* Settle for crumbs even though they know they deserve better

Many companies have success starvation too -- they are the ones who reach a plateau of success and then everything seems to stop. Companies that have their foot on the brake:

* Reach a level of success that's comfortable -- then stop growing

* Try to be all things to all customers

* Never refuse work even when it's outside their area of expertise

* Set unattainable or unrealistic goals

* Alienate clients and prospects by overpromising and underdelivering

Companies are just groups of individuals acting in concert (or not, as the case may be). Self-sabotage is a problem that starts at the individual level and can spill over into many areas of the organization.

You can stop starving yourself of success by first identifying people who can support you unconditionally. While this may sound touchy-feely, all of us need the support of others (people like teachers, coaches, or mentors) to become all we want to be.

Example: Carol felt guilty whenever she bought something for herself. She thought she was neglecting her family and other responsibilities. I pointed out to her that depriving herself wasn't contributing to the happiness of anyone else. This helped her see that going without didn't mean others had more. She was able to take a vacation for the first time in years.

Second, many business owners need to become willing to succeed. Few people realize that what they want is also what they fear.

Example: David, a CEO, felt "stuck" in his business -- not quite unsuccessful but not successful either. The benefits of limited success included not having to hire more employees...fewer management headaches...and a lower payroll. The cons were less income...fewer opportunities...and a decreased ability to make a difference in the world.

While reviewing the pros and cons, David realized he didn't need to feel guilty for not being more successful. Soon after, his business began to grow almost on its own.

Finally, establish Goal-Free Zones. Set a time and place when you don't do anything -- where there are no goals, deadlines or responsibilities. Many companies are now instituting "nap time" because they see the benefits of having employees fresh rather than listless at 3:00 pm every day.

Many of us feel overwhelmed by our to-do lists and believe the world will end if we don't achieve everything today. Take ten minutes a day to stop setting or achieving goals. These simple actions can be the first steps to allowing you and your business to be all you can be.
