According to Wikipedia, affiliate marketing is a method of promoting web business merchants/advertisers) in which an affiliate (publisher) is rewarded for every visitor, subscriber, customer, and/or sale provided through his or her efforts.

Affiliate marketing has become one of the most effective ways to make good money online. It's one of the fastest growing industries due to the fact that it is cost effective and profitable for both the affiliate and the merchant. Affiliate solution providers and the affiliate network can also benefit as well. It really is a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Being an affiliate marketer frees you from creating your own product or service and in many cases it requires little or no investment at all. Your job is to send traffic to the merchant's website through your link. You will then earn a fraction of the total price after each successful sale. If you are looking to join the growing number of affiliate marketers and create a passive income online then consider the following three steps.

1. Identify your interests and passions. Start off with hobbies and topics you know a lot about. This will allow you to establish yourself as an expert in your chosen field and gain the trust of your potential customers. In order to be successful with affiliate marketing you need to able to come up with create marketing strategies. This may include unique content web pages, reports, or videos on your topic. All of this is easier when you already have wealth of knowledge about your subject.

2. Create a website for your chosen field. Here is where you can offer the content needed to gain the trust required to get people to buy. Once you have that set up, search for products and services related to your area of interest. When choosing a merchant, be sure to consider the commission structure and conversion rate. You can always find information about the best affiliate programs and which merchants pay best through affiliate solution providers and affiliate networks.

3. The final step to affiliate marketing success also happens to be the most important- promotion. You will need to promote your website and the products you want to offer your prospective customers. Article marketing, PPC, holding seminars, there are many ways to build traffic and increase your exposure. Be creative and keep your methods up to date. This can be done be subscribing to marketing blogs and e-zines who give up to date information for net marketers.

As long as you have clear focus and are willing to learn, you should have success with affiliate marketing.

Take care

Affiliate marketing is more like niche.
Finding a niche that you like, create a website for it and promote it.

Is is the same thing??

You will be most successful if you choose a niche and promote programs/products that fit within that niche, but I don't think they're the same thing.

Jeff's definition in the first sentence of his article is accurate:
According to Wikipedia, affiliate marketing is a method of promoting web business merchants/advertisers) in which an affiliate (publisher) is rewarded for every visitor, subscriber, customer, and/or sale provided through his or her efforts.

Again using Wikipedia, a niche is "a focused targetable portion (subset) of a market. By definition, then, a business (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Business) that focuses on a niche market (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Market) is addressing a need for a product or service that is not being addressed by mainstream (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainstream) providers. A niche market may be thought of as a narrowly defined group of potential customers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Customers)."

So, a affiliate marketing is more effective if you stick within a particular niche, but the term niche is not interchangeable with the term "affiliate marketing".

Good point Amit. I think many of our visitors could benefit by a more in-depth discussion of how to use URL cloaking....

I have found blogging to be a great marketing tool.

Just pick a problem or desire an affiliates product addresses, write articles about those issues, then suggest the affiliate products that can solve the problem.

I wonder, though, if I should keep blogs on their free hosts or if I should have a blog on my own site with my own domain.

Which arrangement is better?

So far in my past month one thing i have realized is if your trying to promote goods and/or certain services on traffic exchanges, text ad exchanges, saflists, or traffic builders of that type not many people will look.

To be successful marketing on those types of advertisement mediums you better be selling a product, system, idea or something that help get more traffic or makes getting traffic a little easier.

I also try and keep in personal contact as often as I can to keep everyone under me motivated and share ideas and tips.

I think you made a very good point Kha. Being successful with affiliate marketing requires more then starting a blog or website.
You need to learn the basics of SEO, building links and other forms of marketing in order to get the traffic to make the sale.

Thanks

John

Truly, affiliate program is an easy way to make money on the internet. But by saying easy doesn't mean you're going to sit back and do nothing. It requires a lot of marketing , promoting tactics and strategies too. Just have a positive attitude towards it and do whatever it takes.

Hi Trevor,

I guess that depends on what you would consider easy. Some people really do want to be able to do nothing. Of course those are the ones who fail and then blame it on the program.

Making money in any business requires effort. I agree 100% that a positive, can-do attitude is essential!

I think there is great scope for making money with affiliate marketing - But as with any business - you get back what you put in.

If you expect to be able to build a website around your chosen niche, populate it with content and reviews of the products you are an affiliate for, and leave it to start making you thousands each month, you willl be sorely disappointed.

If however you approach it as you would any other business, and give it your full attention, (at LEAST a couple of hours per night if it not your main job) then in a year's time, you MAY be able to just maintain the site as a stand alone income generator and move onto another site - This is where you can really start to make a living online!

My biggest piece of advice would be to GIVE IT TIME - and don't give up. Research, implement and practice SEO and online marketing techniques, and you will make a success as an affiliate marketer.

Affiliate marketers now are so eager to earn lots of money without looking at the fact that it's not that easy making money online. That's a common mistake that is happening nowadays. Marketing online is not easy money, it's just like any other business. Time and Effort is still needed for it to grow.

I agree, what's easy for me can be hard for someone else. Whatever program you use can never work out and make you successful if you intend to just do nothing but reap.
