Since I began working at home, one of the most common misconceptions I have seen is that people believe by working at home they’ll have more time with their children.

What I often see happen is that those with this belief are quickly discouraged and often walk away from the business they’ve only just begun. It is quite common for someone in direct sales to not be in business beyond ninety days.

Prior to ever starting a direct sales business, I believe it’s crucial to develop a work plan. Your plan should include home commitments and business commitments. I love day planners which list each day along with the hours in that day. For those with Outlook on their computers, Outlook has the same calendar function, a full 24 hour day with time increments already in place.

Laptops and books in a car can be lifesavers. It is my opinion that those in business should invest at least ten minutes per day reading something that is business related. This can be a book, an article or a magazine.

As moms we often have to drive our children to and from school, to and from music and dance lessons and to and from sports practices. Make it a point to arrive ten minutes early to your destination. This will give you those ten minutes daily to read.

I use my laptop to write articles, develop newsletters, take notes from the books or magazines I’ve read and to write emails that I’ll send once I’m connected to the internet.

Laptops and books can travel in cars, to doctor’s offices and on public transportation.

Cell phones also are very handy tools. I carry mine with me everywhere. You can make and return calls while waiting for the kids and while driving. I have a hands free device for my phone as safety is always my first concern.

You’ll still need to invest time at home working, however, using the tips I’ve provided can help you find a balance between running a business and being a mom.
