A heavy, high-fat breakfast can lead to a mid-morning slump, and a sugar rush can lead to a ravenous, jittery state. Eating no breakfast at all is even worse - studies indicate that starting the day on an empty stomach can reduce both mental and physical performance. Grains for breakfast may sound a little boring compared to tastebud-pleasing butter or sugar, but throw herbs and spices into those grains and you will be throwing in not just great flavor, but health benefits too!

Many spices contain powerful antioxidants or other phytochemicals that aid digestion, reduce cholesterol or blood sugar, or fight cancer, among other benefits. Regularly including them in your diet helps promote your good health.

Here’s a few ideas:

Cinnamon -
The natural choice, it tastes sweet, so you can often eliminate a quarter of the sugar or more required in a recipe by using Watkins Cinnamon. Some studies suggest that it may aid digestion, inhibit ulcer formation, lower blood pressure, and increase the effectiveness of insulin. Ideal for hot cereal, fruit breads, dry cereal, poached fruit and muffins.

Ginger -
Offers incredible medicinal properties, fighting tumour growth and preventing blood platelets from sticking together to name just two. Adds terrific flavor to hot cereals, pancakes and cold cereals.

Caraway -
may assist those who have problems digesting whole grains, because it possesses stomach-soothing activity.
Use to liven up earthy whole-grain breads such as rye, topped with jam or preserves and you have a healthy morning meal.

Cloves -
contain eugenol, which can boost your antioxidant levels. Some studies indicate cloves may keep blood platelets from clumping together and stimulate the production of cancer-fighting enzymes. Swirl a pinch of ground cloves in hot cereal with a 1/4 cup chopped fresh apples and microwave!

Parsley -
a terrific source of vitamin C, iron and beta-carotene. Add chlorophyll rich parsley to your potato pancakes or scrambled eggs and enjoy.
