Affiliate marketing is basically getting a code from a company, pasting it into an advertisement and receiving money, when you make a sale. That’s the basics. The depth comes in when you try to use PPC and they won’t let you advertise your affiliate link. Keep in mind I only use PPC for split testing things, in the beginning. You can function with out a web site although it is better, when you have your own for tracking purposes.
The best advertising is free advertising. I suggest article marketing and forum marketing. It's a big ocean as one person has already replied. You'll need to research and make tests. Don't spend a lot of money because that’s not needed. You basically advertise your link one way or another.

Could someone explain to me how realestate affiliate marketing works?
I am pretty good at product affiliate marketiing and this sparked my interest.
Let me know what type of potential this has and the best way to get into it.
Thanks,
Steve

A real estate affiliate program is an affiliate program which involves the real estate owner to pay commissions to the sales person or publisher for any real estate sales lead referred by him (sales person).
Starting a real estate affiliate program is a great idea, but IMO you could also be a Real Estate Broker by joining some popular (not scam) and free online business marketplaces. This enables them to gather business inquiries from global prospects and could also stay in touch with customers/community members. My signature link could help you.
